Arsenal left Munich with a 2-2 draw after Declan Rice equalised with eight minutes remaining, cancelling out a Harry Kane penalty that had turned the game in Bayern Munich's favour. The point kept Arsenal unbeaten in the league phase, but it came at a cost: Bukayo Saka was forced off in the opening minutes with a thigh injury.
An early blow, then an Arsenal lead
Saka went down without contact inside the first ten minutes and was replaced by Eberechi Eze. The substitute made an immediate impact. In the 25th minute he ran onto a pass from Martin Ødegaard and finished with his left foot into the bottom corner. The assistant referee flagged for offside after the ball went in, but a VAR review confirmed the goal.
Bayern were level about ten minutes later. Kane split the Arsenal defence with a pass, and Alphonso Davies slid his shot past David Raya on the counter-attack.
Kane's penalty and Rice's reply
Bayern went ahead early in the second half. Jurrien Timber was penalised for handball inside the area, and Kane scored the penalty.
The goal extended Kane's run to ten consecutive Champions League appearances with a goal, making him only the second player to reach that mark in the competition's history. According to Al Jazeera, it was also his 16th goal in 23 matches against Arsenal, and he is one match short of the record of 11 in a row held by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Arsenal pushed for a reply and found it with eight minutes left. Substitute Viktor Gyökeres laid the ball off to Rice in the box, and the England midfielder drove a low shot into the far corner.
Goals: Eze 25' (Arsenal), Davies about 35' (Bayern), Kane penalty, second half (Bayern), Rice 82' (Arsenal).
Chances at both ends
Both goalkeepers were busy. Raya saved from Serge Gnabry and made a point-blank stop from Dayot Upamecano, while Manuel Neuer, making his 163rd Champions League appearance, kept out a header from a Rice corner. Late on, a swerving Timber shot was tipped over the bar.
Bayern were without Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala. Vincent Kompany had been a doubt because of illness but took his place on the touchline.
Reaction
Kane told TNT Sports that he was slightly disappointed but that, over 90 minutes, a draw was probably a fair result. Arsenal's website quoted Mikel Arteta as saying: "To do that in this stadium is impressive."
Where it leaves the teams
After three matches Arsenal are seventh in the league-phase table on seven points; Bayern are 14th on five. According to Arsenal's official report, Arsenal's unbeaten run in Champions League league-phase matches now stands at 15.
Analysis: Scoring first, falling behind and still avoiding defeat away to Bayern is a strong result for Arsenal, and the response after Kane's penalty showed composure. The bigger story, however, may be Saka's fitness. Arsenal play Everton on Saturday and travel to Slavia Prague in the Champions League on 4 November; how long he is out will shape both.
