Real Madrid kept their perfect record in this season's Champions League with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday. The final word went to Yan Diomande, the former Leipzig winger, who came off the bench to score with a volley into the top corner.
Silva and Güler put Madrid in control
The opening goal came shortly before half-time. Federico Valverde cut the ball back to Arda Güler, whose shot was parried by Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, and Bernardo Silva tapped in the rebound. It was Silva's first goal for Madrid since he joined the club from Manchester City in the summer.
Madrid doubled their lead in the 52nd minute. Jude Bellingham crossed to the far post, Kylian Mbappé headed the ball across goal, and Güler turned it in from close range.
A late flurry
The last ten minutes produced three goals. Mbappé curled a shot from the edge of the area into the top corner in the 83rd minute to make it 3-0. Leipzig responded two minutes later when Tidiam Gomis finished a fast break, but Madrid restored the three-goal margin in the 87th minute: Brahim Díaz crossed and Diomande struck a volley into the top corner.
Goals: Silva 43', Güler 52', Mbappé 83', Gomis 85' (Leipzig), Diomande 87'.
Diomande's return to face his old club
Diomande left Leipzig for Madrid in the summer in a deal reported to be worth €140 million, which Al Jazeera describes as a club-record fee. The goal against his former club was his third in his last four appearances.
Mbappé, who scored once and set up Güler's goal, was again central to Madrid's attack.
What the win means
Madrid have now won all three of their league-phase matches, and the result was their fourth consecutive win in all competitions. Leipzig, coached by Martín Demichelis, suffered another heavy defeat.
Analysis: The win offers José Mourinho's team some reassurance after reports of an uneven start to the domestic season. Madrid were patient rather than spectacular in the first half, but the quality of their late goals shows how much attacking talent the squad holds, and summer signings Silva and Diomande both contributed. Conceding on a counter-attack while leading comfortably is the one point Mourinho is likely to address.
What comes next
Madrid travel to Barcelona for El Clásico in La Liga on Sunday. Their next Champions League match is away to AEK Athens on 4 November.
